Macy’s is set to close over a dozen stores in the coming months. The department store chain told Axios on Thursday that it will close 14 stores across the country to focus resources on stronger-performing locations. The closures span 12 states, including one New York location: the Macy’s at Boulevard Mall in Amherst. These locations are scheduled to close during the first quarter of 2026. Clearance sales are expected to begin in mid-January and run for approximately 10 weeks. These closures are part of the brand’s “A Bold New Chapter” turnaround strategy. This aligns with a broader plan Macy’s unveiled in February 2024 to shutter 150 of its approximately 500 locations by the end of 2026. Moving forward, the retailer intends to concentrate on its “350 go-forward Macy’s locations.” In a memo to employees, CEO Tony Spring explained that the company is making “targeted changes” to phase out underperforming stores and redirect investment toward its strongest assets. Interestingly, this announcement follows a strong holiday season. Macy’s Inc., which also operates Bloomingdale’s and Bluemercury, reported its best sales growth in over three years this past December.
